Impact of Innovation in Infrastructure & Efficient Cargo Handling System in Lighterage Ports
Abstract
Lighterage ports play an important role in the maritime logistics, particularly in regions with draft limitations. With the increased internationalization of trade, ports are required to modernize by new infrastructure and improved cargo-handling systems. This increases performance, productivity and sustainability. This study analyzed the impacts of infrastructure innovation, as well as an effective cargo-handling system on the performance of the lighterage ports. It was concerned with the operational efficiency, productivity, costefficiency, and environmental sustainability. The study adopted method was quantitative in nature where we collected primary data in the form of structured questionnaires among 100 respondents who were associated with the lighterage port and cargo handling. The study design was for descriptive and analytical research where Pearson correlation and regression
analysis in SPSS was used to test the hypotheses and analyze the relationships among variables. Result findings indicate that innovation in infrastructure is quite beneficial in terms of operational and cost efficiency. Productivity also has a moderate correlation with cargohandling efficiency (r=0.482). Regression analysis shows that the two innovation points (infrastructure and cargo-handling systems) have a significant effect on cost efficiency and the environment sustainability (p < 0.05). The conclusion shows that the continued investment in the development and the modernization of the infrastructure and the implementation of the latest technologies related to cargo-handling is a significant boost to the overall performance of the lighterage ports. The upgrades enhance the efficiency of the operations and economy and facilitate the development of sustainable and environmentfriendly port operations.
